Bjørn Nørgaard: Much dreaming and many words are meaningless

News

Hafnia Foundation is proud to present and promote a fine art solo exhibition named "Bjørn Nørgaard: Much dreaming and many words are meaningless" curated by Susanne Ottesen, in August 2016 at the Susanne Ottsen Gallery (Denmark).

Bjørn Nørgaard's recent sculptures cover a wide field; they range from material accumulations on the scale of the body to monumental works spanning the gallery space from wall to wall and from floor to ceiling. The sculptures are made of numerous materials including cast iron, basalt, bronze, glass, stucco marble, aluminium, concrete, wood, steel, plaster, ceramics, gold, enamel, felt, copper, clay, granite, beeswax, everlasting flowers, bird feathers, - all of which have their own histories, meanings and sensualities.

The first part of the exhibition consists of aluminium figures standing on tall pillars made of ferro-concrete and profiled steel. The sculptures are conceivable as modern versions of so-called stylites or pillar-saints; Christian ascetics from the 5th to the 12th century who opted to live for years or for their whole life on pillars, preaching, fasting and praying. In the actual works the pillars in question are translated into recognizable objects that have been cut in half, such as a bureau, a pile of newspapers or the front part of a car. Only the front of the pillar is elaborated whereas the reverse side shows its construction. The aluminium "saints" on top are scale models of actual people in everyday poses.

Exhibitions

Hafnia Foundation is proud to present and promote the most recent exhibition of US artist Stevens Vaughn, named “The rebirth of color” curated by Massimo Scaringella, in June 2016 at the National Art Gallery in Sofia,

Bulgaria. The opening is on Thursday 2th May 2016 - 6 pm.

Stevens Vaughn’s artistic experience establishes with his gestures a relationship with life in a kind of mythical ritual, inherited from his experiences in China and Japan, changing the way of seeing beyond aesthetic expression in a fantastic privileged condition. Because he does not look outside, but inside: inside his origins, inside his self, choosing the ideal gesture, the ideal form, among proportions to be challenged, colors to be exhibited and dream-like signs to be exalted. The very same artist affirms: “Mystery is the essence of my being. I inhabit a world of chaos, a world where the outcome is no more relevant than the beginning. Rituals create a sense of order in my existence. I have a fascination with rituals. The most sacred of my rituals involve water”.

“A painting is not a picture of an experience, it is an experience.” We could draw on this thought by Mark Rothko to describe Stevens Vaughn's work, which conveys the meaning of a visual essentially, only apparently confusing, but structurally associated with an ironic and colorful view, expressing with its irrepressible sign a misleading gestural line, guided by a manual drive that is full of emotional and cultural expressionism that belongs in a sound reality.
