Bjørn Nørgaard (Denmark)
Prof. Bjørn Nørgaard's works can be found worldwide with the bulk of his work in Scandinavia, on the walls of the seat of the Danish Government, the Christiansborg Palace, 14 Royal Tapestries illustrating the “History of Denmark” from the time of the Vikings until the present. These tapestries were designed and finished by Prof. Norgaard and woven by La Manufacture Nationale de la Tapisserie de Beauvais and La Manufacture des Gobelins in France. These exquisite tapestries express a contemporary sensibility through the art of traditional weaving. The people of the world identify Copenhagen with a small art deco statue of the “Little Mermaid” in the harbor. In order to honor Hans Christian Andersen on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his death, a competition was held under Royal Patronage to create a new “Little Mermaid”. Prof. Nørgaard's “Genetically Altered Mermaid” was chosen to be installed permanently in the Copenhagen Harbor in 2006. It sits off-shore from a sculpture park of 5 other works by the same artist.
